WASHINGTON, 7th December.
Mr. John N. Garner, Democrat representative in the House from Texas for the past twenty-eight years, was elected Speaker at the opening of Congress on Monday by the victory of the Democrats in the control of the House for the first time for twelve yean with 219 seats to 214 Republicans, one FarmerLabour, and ono vacancy for New Hampshire. Tho Republican nominee, Mr. Snell, of New York, is now expected to become the minority leader.
Mr. John Nance Garner is from Red liiyer County, Texas, and has been a Congressman.:, for the Fifteenth Texas District ever since the 58th Congress. Ho has been a floor leader of tho Democrats and was previously. in the Texas House of Representatives. He is 62 years of age.
Mr. Bertrand H. Snell, who has been in Congress since 1915 "representing the 31st New York District, is a graduate of Amh erst and George Washington. Universities, and is associated with many enterprises, oil, paper, cheese, power, and investment.
