THE THREEPENNY FARE

RATEPAYERS' OPINION

Reference to the proposal that the threepenny tram fare should be raised was made by Mr. H. H. Miller, at the quarterly meeting of the Wellington Ratepayers' Association last evening. "The executive has ascertained that there is likely to be a substantial loss on tramway undertaking's this year, and suggestions have been made that either the universal tram ticket be increased in price or as an alternative the loss be met out of rates," he said. "The association reaffirms the planks of its platform, that: (1) Rates should be reduced; and (2) the universal ticket should not be increased in price, bnt that the City Council should effect such economics as are necessary to make the tramways balance its own budget; (3) wo believe we speak for the whole of tho ratepayers when we affirm this principle, that all trading departments in tho City Council balance their own budget, aud that under no consideration should losses be placed upon the rates or profits appropriated to tiic general account."
