PETONE CLUB

The Petone Rifle Club members made their firnt appearance on the Sedclon Range for the 1931-32 season on Saturday, the ranges being 800 and 900 yards. There was a good attendance of members; but although fine, the weather conditions were such that at times it was impossible to judge the strength of the wind with any reasonable degree of accuracy, and in consequence some of the performances were very mediocre. At 800 yards the club standard is 47; but on Saturday even under the difficult conditions two B grade members (C. Lusty and P. Stewart) recorded 48 each. A. O'Dounell and K. E. (Solomon were next with 45 each, followed jby K. Git tings, J. Carter, and T. Chapman with 44 each. At 900 yards the first few men to fire simply could not make accurate decisions as to the wind, and misses appeared on every card. The top scorer was O. Pedersen, who topped the scoring here with 45, followed by T. B. Richards (a new member) 43, W. H. Ballinger and W. Sanders 42 each. The best aggregates off the gun were secured by two B grade members (C. Lusty and P. Stewart) with 89 each. It is seldom that Trentham is in such a difficult mood that none of the members can reach the club standard of 91 for these two distances; but on Saturday all the A grade members were far short of this total. K. Gittings and W. H. Balliuger were next with 85 each, N. E. Solomon and T. Chapman 84 each, O. Pedersen 83. Next Saturday the club will continue the championships and other long-range (handicap) competitions, ranges 800 and 900 yards. The following are the scores: — 800 900 yds. yds. Hep. Tl. O.
