FURTHER PROTEST

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

At last night's meeting of the council o£ the Wellington Chamber of Commerce the question of the prohibition of parking in Victoria street came up for consideration. Mr. J. P. Luke remarked that it seemed as if the City Council was not at all careful in looking after the interests of business people. The practical prohibition of parking all along Victoria street was obviously an injustice and unworkable, and the same remark applied to other streets. It was the business firms that filled the City Couudl 's coffers, and the business firms should enter au emphatic protest. Other members pointed out that the parking of cars in the city vas becoming a nuisance: it was tho cars that were parked from 9 a.m. until tho owners went home at night that were tho trouble. Parking, it _ was suggested, should be prohibited in front of warehouses and other business premises, as parking in these areas delayed business, but there was no reason why parking should not bo allowed elsewhere in Victoria street. If parking was allowed for thirty minutes, as in other streets, it would allow time to transact business.

On the statement being made that a deputation of interested parties was waiting upon the City Council to discuss the subject, it was decided to appoint a sub-committee to go into the matter, and to ally itself to the deputation.
