DISMISSED WORKERS

ALLIANCE RESOLUTION

At a meeting of the New Zealand Alliance of Labour held yesterday, the secretary of the New Zealand Workers' Union reported that through the stoppage of the railway works at least 1600 men were displaced. These 1600 workers had 3400 dependants, and it was therefore essential that employment should be found immediately for them. The following resolution was carried:—

"That this meeting of the Council of the New Zealand Alliance of Labour condemns the action of the Government in ceasing working operations on railway construction jobs and dismissing some hundreds of workers who have been in the employ of tho Public Works Department for a number of years. As these workers have wives and children dependent upon them, we call upon the Government to immediately provide employment for them at the same rates of pay and conditions of work as obtained on the jobs from which they were dismissed."
