MERCANTILE LEAGUE

UMPIRES' ASSOCIATION

A comprehensive resume of last season's activities is given in the aumia] ic'ioil, of the Wellington Mercantile Cricket League, to be presented to dpl'-gates at. the annual meeting of the league, on 7th September. I'Vom all points of view, it is; sladd, lh<: 10^0-31 season was the most successful experienced to date. Entries in tin; competitions constituted a record, thirty-six clubs, comprising thirty-eight teams, being represented. Interest was very keen; lliu play was of a high standard, and the line sporting spirit shown in former years was again in evidence. The opinion is expressed that the new method of scoring—three points instead of two for a win and one point for v draw —tended to speed up play considerably, with the result that, although there was a number of drawn games, the percentage was not nearly so great as in the past. In dealing with this matter, mention is made that the question of playing times is one which the committee has been considering for some time, and it is pointed out that at the annual meeting a motion will probably bo submitted with the object of increasing the hours of play slightly. Details are given of the performances of teams in the four grade championship competitions and in other games played during the season. j
