' WESTPORT, 18th July. | Played, under adverse weather conditions and on a slippery field, the first Seddon Shield match of the season, between Buller (holders) and Marlborough (challengers, resulted in a draw. With the wind in its favour for the first spell, Buller had Marlborough continually, on the defensive, and tries were scored by M'Neight and Stewart," one try being converted by Holder. In the second half Marlborough was-fa.voured with -the wind, and again and again drove Bullerhack'on .to its line. Mahervsc6red a try,: whieh.Diaek converted. The latter player also ticked a penalty goal, making the score 8-all. From then on the game was fought grimly, the Buller 'forwards particularly saving the situation for the shield defenders, who were repeatedly hard-pressed to prevent the visitors scoring. For Buller, M'Neight, M'Kenzie, Simpson, and Caldwell were outstanding in the forwards, while Holder, Greer, and Lamont were the pick of the backs. On the Marlborough side, Diack, M'Donald, Phillips, and Newman in .the backhand Hammond, Bartlett, Fleming, Bpthatn, and Patehett in the forwards were always prominent. '
