SURPRISE WIN

W.Y.M.L,surprised everyone wlieu they defeated Dianibnd'by 2 goals to nil on Saturday, The -win was gained by better use; of opportunities and a wonderful defence in the second spell. The teams were:— ' "■-. ."" , ■ Diamond: Wyatt; Wotherspooti. Guesfc; .Geddisj. Bishop, J. M'Leod; E. M'Leod, Bigby, Dickeuson, Smith, Bryson. . WXI1: Taylor; Trott, M'Girr; Hughes, Beasley, Harrison; T. Rabbitt, W. Rabbitt,, M'Leod, Telford, Miniile. , W.Y.M.L won the toss, and played with a freshening wind behind them. Before long they capped a smart rush by M'Leod putting the ball through, and took the lead by one §oal to nil. Diamond were countering with some good rushes, aud one mistake by Beasley let J. M'L.eod swing the bull to Smith, who was closing in 011 the goal with Dickenson when Taylor rushed out and saved in the nick of time. M'Cirr then gave Way a corner, but saved by good heading, and a Y.M. rush began. Dickenson, Rigby, and R. M'Leod started the next Diamond movement, but carried the ball just too far when the defence was rattled. Then M'Girr took- a long shot at goal and there was some hot work before the posts, at the end of which Beasley drove powerfully into the net. W.Y. M.I. % Diamond 0. The wind had increased, aud the clearing kicks of the Diamond backs were curving down behind them, some of them crossing the lino for corners. One rush by tho Rabbitt brothers ended in a- fine cross before the goal mouth, but the chance was missed. At this :stai{o some of the Diamond halves and backs found their kicks landing" nicely before tho.goal to help Y.M., and Telford just missed with a powerful shot from one such chance. Just before the spell tho Diamond forwards broke away and Bryson, Smith, and Dickenson fronted an empty, goal, Taylor dashing out,-but Dickenson's kick in the melee dribbled up to the post, struck it, and pnssed the line. Y.M. rushed buck and missed an equally easy shot at the other end ot the field, and the whistle blew. '. The second spell was singularly uninteresting, for, after one short attack Y.M. were defending all the time. Tli'e fine work of the halves, M'Oirr rand Trott, was what brought thnm their victory. Faultless pln.y> by Taylor, however, was the high light" of, the spell. Within a few minutes of the start of play ho stopped three terrific drives, making the cleanest of saves, one from a difficult kick by Bryson. Another time he dodged a bunch of forwards and cleared calmly. Bishop missed one fine shot and Dickenson sent one sailing just too high. Diamond simply could not break through, and though they redoubled their efforts as time went on, the defence defied them. There was a good deal of kicking for the line by the Y.M. backs at one stage, but for the most part little, time was lost from these tactics, Once Diamond had a tree kick just outside the penalty areas but, even this was .useless to them, and the final whistle saw them go down to defeat without scoring a goal, the final score being W.Y .M.I. 2, Diamond 0. . ..-Mr. H. W. Smith was the referee.
