EMBARGO ON STOCK

IMPORTS

The much discussed embargo on the. importation of stock was considered by the conference of. the New Zealand Farmers' Union last evening. Generally, delegates were not in favour of the embargo being lifted, but a few voiced different opinions. Mr. 11. B. Stuekey (Dannevirke) said that there was more chance of foot aud mouth disease coming into New Zealand through packing than through live stock. ' He referred to the quality of New Zealand meat, and said that the opinion had been expressed that NewZealand was likely to lose her position on the market because of the deterioration of the stock. Other countries were getting 1 the cream of English stock, and they would take New Zealand's place on the English market unless farmers here were careful." » ft ' . On the other hand, the consensus of opinion was that the danger to bo run, if the embargo was lifted, was too great, and the following remit, was carried :— That this conference emphatically protests against the proposal to. lift the embargo on imported live stock from countries infested with foot and mouth disease, or from or through the agency of any other country, and Urges the Government to refrain from giving effect to any such proposal.
