WARNING NOT TAKEN

BREACH OF PROBATION

"His reporting has been.most irregular right through," said the Probation Officer, Mr. T. P. Mills, at the Magistrate's Court to-day, when : Reginald Daly Austin, a taxi-driver, appeared before Mr. E. Page, S.M., on a charge of failing to comply with the conditions of a probationary licence. ■ Mr. Mills told the Magistrate that Austin had been granted probation in February, 1930, for the theft of an overcoat. He was ordered to pay costs, 245, and £2 as depreciation in value on the coat. He had only made restitution of £1 during that time, and had not reported unless he was written to and warned. Mr. Mills considered that Austin' was "just flouting the law in that' respect." The accused's general conduct was fairly satisfactory.

Asked whether he had anything to* say, Austin told tho Magistrate that his main reason for not reporting was that he did not like going to Mr. Mills unless he had money. Whatever money he had .had he had given to his family. . . .. Mr. Page: "You have had your chance. You had numerous reminders' from the Probation Officer, and you ; failed to take the warning." "' The • accused' was sentenced to two months' imprisonment.
