TRAWLERS' CREWS
DIFFICULTY OVER SUNDAYS
The crew of ,the Futurist.wero paid off yesterday. 'Last .Saturday they were offered tho same terms as the men of the Nora Nivcn, which has been idle some weeks. ' Since' the war' the crews of both vessels have been paid a flat rate bonus of £1 a man for each Sunday and holiday .spent at sea,-but New Zealand Fisheries, Ltd., it was stated by ono of the company's officials today, decided to discontinue tho Sunday bonus, while continuing tho holiday bonus. The men were promised every alternate ■ week-end in port, with , one full day in port as compensation whon the Sunday w as spent' at sea, but stated that they must consult their union, and on Monday;'when the Futurist was, duo to sail, the' crew wero missing. There is no agreement between the company and. tho union, nor are the trawlers under an.'award of the Arbitration Court. Ou, tin average-two Sundays a month arc spent at' sea. Deck hands' earnings average £2- with keep, and firemen's earnings ayerago £20 a month and keep. The discontinuance of the Sunday bonus therefore represents roughly a 10 per cent, reduction.
Tho Seamen's Union had no comment to make on the, position to-day, but the Futurist is, being watched by union officials. ,-. / .
