A REMARKABLE RESPONSE.
A tribute to the splendid spirit shown throughout the whole community in assisting to deal with the unemployment problem was paid by tho Hon. W. Downie Stewart (Reform, Dunedin West) in the House of Representatives yesterday. Mr. Stewart said it used to be said that the more tho Government did'the more the springs of private benevolence dried up, but a splendid effort had been made, even by people with small resources to afford relief. "It is said,'' he added, "that the poor help the poor." '■.-■■ Mr. I\ Langstone (Labour, Waimarino): "It is very nearly time the rich helped them." \. _ The speaker said he knew that.many rich people had been doing a great deal j more than the Government had called on them, to do. Ho did not wish to suggest that one section of the community was doing its job and that another was not.. The response .generally had been remarkable and filled one with admiration.
