HEAVY SNOWFALL

ASHBURTON, This Day.

The county last night experienced the heaviest snow for thirty years. Seven inches fell at Methven, and three to four in Ashburton. There was half an inch, with heavy hail and sleet, along the coast. After an hour of sunshine this morning the snow is coming again. The Power Board lost seven poles through the weight of snow. CHEISTCHUECH, 28th June. Though it has been snowing since early afternoon in North Canterbury, nono was experienced in the city till seven o'clock, when it set in. The ground, however, was too wet for it to lie. CHBISTCHITECH, This Day. / There was a heavy snowfall all over Canterbury to-day after light falls with ! sleet and rain overnight. The back country is all covered and stock may suffer if it continues. Many breaks in telegraph lines are reported, including one at Kirwoe on the west coast route, and one north of Kaikoura, but communication is being maintained by use of other circuits. OAMABU, This Bay. Snow fell at Oamaru this morning. The weather is now cold with rain. The moisture will be of. great, benefit to agriculture. TIMAEU, This Day. Eesidents of Timaru awoke this morning to find the 'ground covered with snow, which fell during the night. After daylight there was a further fall, but later the sun shone and much of the snow thawed. The fall was approximately half an inch.

All the back ranges are deeply coated and the weather is cold.
