EXODUS OF BRAINS

(From "Tho Post's" Representative.) SYDNEY, 18th June.

One can easily picture a general esodos of bright brains from New South Wales to other States which place a higher value upon them, if Mr. Lang's £500 salary limit scheme ia ever adopted, which is not likely to be the case even' if the brilliant idea tickles the ears of the Trades Hall at a juncture when it is badly in need of a political stimulus. Thirty years ago £10 a week was regarded as a really good salary, but, if New South Wales gets back to the old standard, not merely tho cost of living, but also the staggering load of taxation will have to be lightened. And since Mr. Lang is looking everywhere for money and State and Federal taxation in. Now South Wales will be debited with a loss of £1,000,000 or more if salaries and brains are reduced to a dead level of £500, this latest plan conceived in the brain of Mr. Lang appears as absurd as it is illogical. Mr. Lang, quite frankly, scored something of a triumph at the Premiers' Conference; there was no need for him, in the circumstances, to stagO' this salary limit scheme, which, because of its reactions from the standpoint of taxation revenue, is regarded in Sydney as something of a joko.'
