NAPIER PARK RACES

STEEPLES TO PANGOLIN

GREAT CHARTER SCORES

(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") : ■-NAPIER,.' 27th June. The Xapier Park Racing Club's Winter Meeting was concluded to-day in fine but cold:weather. Tho track was.again holding: The attendance "was better than on Thursday, and the totalisator investments amounted to £7107, making a total of £12,512 for the meeting, against £19,441 . Ust year, a -decrease- of ' £689 D. As this was the first golldping fixture to.be held on the Greenmeadows course since the earthquake, the'result miist be considered wholly satisfactory.. .. .'..'. -, ' WARZONE AGAIN. The scratching pen reduced the Waiohiki Hack Hurdles to single-dividend dimensions, and the' first day's winner, Warzone, was again successful. The Trentham bracket, The Warden and Pat's Boy, was made favourite, and the pair saw to the early running, but then Warzone was brought up, and, after leading The Warden : over the last fence, came on to beat him comfortably by two lengths. Eight lengths away was the seven-year-old Martian gelding Battlement, with Mountain Heath and Masher next. The win was the third in succession for'Warzone, and in his present form it is likely that he will not be long in scoring again in like company. Mountain' Heath was sore and did not show his true ability. BEVERAGE ATONES, Beverage failed to do better than a good fourth after being-sent out favourite in tis race oil Thursday, but .he made some amends by winning the Greenmeadows Hack Handicap narrowly, from the first day's winner, Navaho. Moatoa and Nightepeaker led Beverage to the straight, with Navaho coming with a run: on the outside from the back, and.in a hard finish -Beverage hung on determinedly to 'beat Navaho by a head. Hystride, who had followed Beverage into the straight, was half a length away third, and next came Nightspeaker and Lady Ronald. The. winner, wno is a three-year-old bay colt by Tea Tray from the Martian mare Rosita, had previously been successful in, a novice stakes at Woodville last December, and he promises to improve with age. Nevertheless he .was a trifle. lucky, to beat Navaho in to-day?s race. ■'-■ ■~,'■■■■ RORY MOR COMFORTABLY. '. Rory Mor, the favourite for the Ladies' Handicap, a race, for gentleman riders, had that capable amateur, Mr. <L Morris, in the saddle, and he duly materialised after being checked at a : critical "point of the race. He" was a class above that of his opponents, and the distance suited him, so that'when asked to make another effort in the straight he was able'to respond and finally beat False Scent going away :by half a length. Blacksmith was a further length back, followed by Day Lass.'." '■ FIRST IN NEW LiyERY. It was surprising to find Great Charter being relegated to seventh'choice when the betting ceased for the Winter Oaks, but the public's lack'of appreciation'of his ability: was not reflected in the race. Manifesto again saw to the early running, and led into the straight from Freehold, Great Charter, Royal Songster, and Arikira. Freehold was the first to quit, but Manifesto was weakening at the distance, end Great Charter came on well to'win by half a neck from Briar Root, who flashed up along the rail to beat Manifesto for second money by a headt Royal Songbter ■was fourth, and Aiikira, Valsier, and Freehold next. Great Charter who is now owned by Mr. T. White and trained <it Hastings by G. W. B. Greene, has only recently resumed racing, and this was his first success in his new owner's colours. His last win" was in the Liverpool Handicap at the Auckland Spring Meeting. Bnai Root has been finishing on well in Bevei al recent races, and with an ounce of luck should earn' a., winning bracket befoie long. Royal Songßter was the favourite, but was not quite ready. The second favourite, Valsier, was never a possibility, but the race will improve him. SUCCESSION OF Fa£lS. The Park Steeplechase was chiefly remaikable for the number of falls that occurred, and 38 a result the race as a spectacle was robbed of much of its interest. Se\en started and only two completed without mishap. Bon Aryan went out at the first fence, Disrank crashed at the third fence and brought Dapper Boy down, and Winter Day1 and Rigoletto fell at the same fence on the next round. These accidents left only Kaokaoroa and Pangolin standing, and, after the former had all but come down at the last fence, the latter ian to the lead and finished up by winning easily by a couple of chains from Kaokaoroa. Several minutes later Rigoletto was caught by a spectator, the jockey G. Caimont, and completed the remaining thiee fences for third money. This was Pangolin's first success over the country, and he owed- it chiefly to the accidents to the others. His jumping was not impressi\o. Winter Day was going paiticulaily well when he got in close to the obstacle that caused his undoing. FROM ARAB TAPROOT. A feature of Silver Fern's success in the Tual Stakes was that it provided the second maiden :victory, at: tho meeting to the do cendants of a very successful Arab tapioot. He is a five-year-old gelding by Bi&ogno from Nicotine, by St. Clements from Raultau, by Gipsy King, and is thus a half-brother to:.Kinsemy the dam of Happy Hit, who dead-heated with Dick Whittington in Thursday's maiden event.1 In to-day's race he made every post a winning post, and he finished up two lengths ■in front of the favourite, Dick Whitting-. ton. The latter, usually a quick beginner, failed-tq catch, the jump out, but- for : which 'he might ' .well have ..succeeded. -Crown Jest "was a fair third, followed by Mon'Roi, Valina, Dozie,"and Cbrnerofl.

FINAL TO ADVENTUS. Adventus was backed down to favouritism in tlie final race on: Thursday and failed, but .evidently he -was-in need of the race and he made a much better showing to-day, incidentally paying quite , a useful price. The. race provided the best fin- ■ ish at the meeting, the first four, horses —Adventus, Baskier, Kasouli, and Beverage (an earlier winner during the day and penalised 51b)r-crbssing the line with only inches between them and the judge ; placing them in that order. Adventus was last of the quartet some chains from the post, but he slipped up-along the rail in the* last few strides and earned the by a bare half-head. Best of the others was the favourite,' Chief Savage. , Arrowzone. was again disappointing, after having participated in the running to the straight. The race was the first that Adventus had won this "season, but he was a useful per- • formei1 under the .winter scale 'last year. Ho had been showing a return to-form in some recent races, and his .connections ex-, pected him to be successful on the Hawkes Bay circuit. Rasouli Tan another" excellent race under a-good weight, arid with an element of luck might have succeeded.
