Mis. Uallam, president, uas> in the chair at tho annual meeting of the Lyall Bay Cioquct Club, which was held recently in the club pavilion. The lepoit and balance-sheet showed tho club to be in a sound financial position. Thero was a good attendanco of members. Tho following officers wero elected: —President, Mrs. M'Kenzie; vice-president, Mrs. Turner; club captain, Mrs. Rudkiu (reelected); secretary and treasurer, Mrs. Liddell (re-elected); exocutivo committeo, Mesdames M'Kenzie, Turner, Rudkin, Rabbidge, and Liddell; green committee, Mesdames Rudkin, Turner, and Liddell (re-elected). Mrs. Rabbidge was appointed convenor of the tea committee. In recognition of their long and valued service to the club, Mrs. Moran and Mrs. Maintell were unanimously cleeted honorary life members. Using More Wool. "Everybody is knitting now, right through tho country. It is a craze, and offers an opportunity of pushing the sale of New Zealand wools," stated Mrs. A. I. Fraer at a meeting of the Citizens' Unemployment Committee in Christchu.ich. She said that a locallymade throe-ply wool selling at 8d would' compete with anything imported. These remarks were made during a discussion on the question of encouraging the public to buy New Zealand-made goods. Mrs. Fiaer said that women were the chief spenders as far as clothing was concerned, but the girls had not been educated to ask for tho locally-made article. School teachers were in some cases advising the senior scholars concerning tho means of getting the best value in spending, and more education along those lines was needed. Recognition of Bravery. The courageous act of Nurse Margaret Alice Swabey, of the Waikato Hospital &taff, in jumping into the Waikato River on sth October of last year and saving the life of a patient who had escaped from tho hospital, was officially recognised at Hamilton on Thursday evening, when she was presented with tho Royal ' Humane Society's bronze medal (states tho "New Zealand Herald"). The presentation took place in the nurses' homo before a large attendance of representatives of the Hospital Board, the Hamilton Borough Council, _tho Eoyal Humane Society, and the medical and nursing staff of the hospital. Tho chairman, Mr. J. J. Ryburn, Nurse Swabey's performance •as an outstanding act of courage. Tho Mayor, Dr. F. D. Pinfold, said Nurse Swabey had observed the highest traditions of the nursing service. Tho vice-president of tho Royal Humane Society, Mr. J. R. Fow, in presenting Nurse Swaboy with the medal, said her meritorious act had brought distinction to the Waikato Hospital and had added lustre to the name of tho nursing staff. The function was followed by a dance. Successful Bridge Party. Tho bridgo party given by Mrs. A. Longmore at her homo in Brougham street, in aid of tho Wellington Free Kindergarten, realised approximately &£). Mrs. Longmore greatly appreciated the loan of chairs, tables, and table covers. Hunt, Mr. and Mrs, Geddos, Mr. and Mrs. Martin, Mr. and Mrs. Haiden, Mr. and Mrs. Stuait Hardy, Mrs. Donaldson (Whangarei), Miss Cookson, Mrs. and Miss Abbott I (Auckland), Mrs. and Miss Bell, I Mrs. Amos, Mrs. Briton-Smith, Mrs. Butts, Mrs. Palmer, Mrs. Michael, Mrs. Siovwiight, Mrs. C'Donnell, Mrs. Hard castle, Messrs, Maurice Denniston, | Moyes (London), Goldberg (Sydney), ! and S. Pearce. Donations were received from Mr. Lance Sheppard (10s), Mrs. Oswin (10s), Mr. E. Pago (ss), and Mrs. Noel.Nelson (3s 6d). Evening Party at Lyall Bay. A very pleasant evening party was held at Lyall Bay on Saturday evening, when Mr. F.W. Boyd, president of the Home and School Association, and Mrs. Boyd, entertained the executives committee at their' residence in Queen's Drive. The executive, was well represented, and the guests included members of their families, and Mr. O. A. Banner (headmaster) ami Mis. Banner, membeis of the teaching stair', and Mr. 11. M. Hau'is (chairman of tho School Committee) and Mrs, Hanis. The guebt of honour was Mrs. F. G. Hodgman, who had resigned from the committee owing to her removal, lo

During the evening Mr. Boyd took the opportunity, on : behalf of his committee, of presenting Mrs. Hodgman with a. hammered brass yasa, in recognition of her active work on behalf of the association and school. The president referred to the good work done by the recipient, and to her popularity amongst her fellow members. His remarks were endorsed by the secretary (Mi-. B. 0. Gull), and musical honours were accorded. Mr. Hodgman, on behalf of his s wife, acknowledged the gift, and expressed their regret that his business transfer necessitated their removal from Lyall Bay, where they had made many friends. Dancing and cards, interspersed with vocal and elocutionary items, formed the programme, and the evening closed with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne" and tho National Anthem. ' ■• ■
