HOW COUNCILLORS VOTED;

Condemning the commercialisation of the recreational endowments ■' of tha city, "Civis" draws attention to tba attitude of the City. Council in .regard to the proposed installation of a petrol station on part of the Town Belt at Hataitai. He says that Labour mem* bers were reported as being definitely, opposed to such a violation, of trust, and that the Civic League and Bate* payers' Association cannot remain pas* sive on this question if they. wish, .to retain public confidence. Though \th» Mayor stated that there were important reasons why the matter ■ should ';',■■ be taken in committee, "OivisV consider* that no reasons could justify such, a breach of trust as was proposed./ ■■■A* trustees the City Council, had a& right! to enter into negotiations which will not bear the light of publicity. The clause before the City Council in the Reserves Committee's report was as follows:—"That'no further, aotioa' be taken to lease a portion of .the- Town; Belt near the eastern portal of the. Mt. Victoria tunnel as a site for - a petrol service station." v • ■ '
