SOCIETY

The annual meeting of the Wellington South Horticultural Society was held this week. It was reported that the three shows held" during the year had been ■well supported by members, although, the public response was rather disappointing. The balance-sheet showed, a small profit, the small-margins from each show being chiefly due-to the liberal cash prizes. The general section was stated to be. progressing well. This department caters for sewing, cookery, fancywork, and various hobbies, in- addition to . horticulture. Members remarked on the necessity . for arrangements with, all horticultural show organisers to avoid clashing "of fixtures..

The society was fortunate in winning tie "Rose Joseph Trophy" for the first time at the autumn show at the Town Hall, in the suburban societies competition. This wiu was principally due to the fine efiorts.and display by Mr. Chambers. • The society has received from Messrs. Vance Vivian a very handsome trophy in the way of a silver cup for competition during the coming year. Appreciation was expressed at the kindly interest taken in the shows by the retiring Mayor, Mr. Troup, and by his generous donations towards, the children's- prize fund to encourage the juvenile section, which he had on all occasions much admired, i The following: officers were elected:— President,; Mr. T. Hislop, was elected patron, subject to his acceptance. SOUTH AFRICAN VETERANS. : -* . . ■ The Wellington branch of the _ South African War Veterans' Association is holding its annual reunion and smoke concert in the Returned Soldiers' Rooms, Brandon street, at 8 p.m. to-morrow. The president, Major P. E. de 8.. Brandon, extends a cordial invitation to all South African War Veterans, whether of Imperial or Colonial forces, to be present.
