FINE BOOK-PLATES
ART GALLERY FUNCTION
1 The arranging of an exhibition of book-plates, and thus giving many people the opportunity of seeing a branch of art which is not; widely understood, was quite an inspiration, and, although the weather was almost at its worst last night, there was a good attendance at the private view of these delightful additions to a good library. The-walls of the Art Gallery; in Whitmore street are plainly canvassed; for the purpose of exhibition, and there are hundreds of charming; little pictures there, which represent the • taste of different people in adorning and marking their books. It was wonderful in looking round to mark the diversity of designs, the heraldic, perhaps, are the most, numerous, used largely by those who have crests or eoats-of-arms belonging to their families. Among those wio'attended the opening of the exhibition were the Prime Minister and Mrs. Forbes, Mr. J. 0. Andersen, Mr. Eric Beeves, Mrs. and the Misses Beeves, Dr. Carbery, Dr. and Mrs. Schoflield, Mrs. Sprott, Mr..and Mrs. Coleridge, Mrs. and Miss Malf roy, Miss D. K. Bichmond, Mrs. M. E. Tripe, Mr. and Mas. Hompton, Dr. and Mrs. Twhigg, Dr. Maunsell, Mr. M'Eldowhey, Mr. E. M. Gore, Miss B. Bhind, Mrs. and Miss Bennie, Miss Sheila Kennedy, Miss Eileen Maearthy, Mr. B. Magill, Mrs. and Miss Erans Scott, Mrs. Ellis and Mr. W. M. Page. Mr. Andersen gave «in interesting little address on the value and history of book plates, and later supper was served, and the guests had a pleasant time in examining the very beautiful collections. . • ' :
