GARRISON BALL

A WONDERFUL SUCCESS The. Garrison Ball, hold last night at Buckle Street Drill Hall, was a complete answer to the question asked' in the well-known song, "Are Wo Downhearted?—No!" for, in spito of "salary cuts" and retrenchment in sill Muds of military affairs, there wero quite SOO people present, and never has there been a better display of line scarlet and deep-blue uniforms made, not to montion tho neat blue-grey of tho Flying Corps. Naturally, with such an attendance, the ball went with a swing from start to finish, and the committoo was overwhelmed with congratulations on the success attained by hard work and public interest. The decorations, to begin with, wero outstanding. Hundreds of gay flags were lined across the roof, interspersed with chains of blue, scarlet aud yellow electric lamps, while long wreaths of lycoiiodiuin and groups of ferns made a fairylikc effect. The ControllorGoneral of Prisons (Mr. B. L. Dallard) each year gives permission for the greenery to be obtained from tho prison sections at Wi Tako, v privilege that is much valued. From the same "Nature's jjarden" came many fern fronds, which were placed all round tho walls, alternated witli flax and other bush greenery, coloured streamers, and flags. The orchestra was ou a central stand, decorated with fan effects in coloured crepe paper aud sonio hundreds of well-made roses, and other paper flowers, which had been ordered from the Y.W.C.A. workers, giving. cm-1 ploymciit to a. number of. out-of-work girls. Tho music was one of the specially enjoyablo features■ of the ovening, being most inspiring. The revival of "Mademoiselle from Armonficres" for the "Paul Jones" dance was particularly suitable for a military dance. Tho supper was in cabaret style, and was sewed in the artillery hall, whero heaters had been installed, simi tho decorations wero to match those in the main lin.ll, with tlio addition of quantities of beautiful brown birch. At tho top of the ball-1 room very comfortable arrangements! were made for the chaperons, in the way of carpeted floor and easyi-hairs. Thf Door liiid received an immense amount of attention, motor-cars being'

utilised for the polishing process, and hard work having been put in each night during tho week. Tlio results wore all so good that Lieutenant C. Moaehcn, the energetic secretary, andhis committee, who made excellent hosts during the dance, must have felt repaid for all their hard work.
