DEATH OF MRS. J. DEANE

News lias lately come to Wellington of tho death on I.6th March of Mrs. Juliette Deane, of Worplcsdon, Surrey, a daughter of tho lato Captain ID. Danicll, late- 76th Stirlingshire Eegimont. The family arrived in Wellington by tho ship Adelaide in IS4O, and Captain Daniell vras one of those responsible for the chango of location of the principal settlement from Petono to Lambton Harbour. Ho and his wife lived first in a canvas shelter on Thorndon beach, while the oak-framed house which they had brought with them was put up. This substantial rcsideneo was erected at what is now Abel Smith street, which 40 years later was the residence of Lieut.-Colonol H. E .Render, Commissioner of Defence.' In this homo the lato Mrs. Deano was born in 1842, being baptised by the Rev. O. Hadfleld, later Bishop of Wellington, Colonel W. Wakefleld being her godfather. One of the excitements of this residence was that a lire broke out in the stables behind, and, Mrs. Daniell, knowing that gunpowder was stored there, rushed from tho house with her baby across Polhill's Gully Stream, which ran in front. Another much moro serious one was when Captain Daniell 's life was threatened by the Te Aro Natives, and tho disturbance gavo riso to a proclamation next day. from Mr. Willoughby to tho effect that tho settlers were not to arm against the Natives or to assemble against aggression. This order was not appreciated in those dofcneeloss days. Some years lator, this littlo wooden cottage:'was. removed to Wellington terrace, where, it is believed, it still romairlS. In 18-I'i Captain Daniell removed to Kuiwarra, but. tho Native unrest about Porirua obliged the family to return to Wellington, nnd in 184.S they we.ro in Lower Hutt Lieut.-Coloncl W. A. M< Cleverly (Commander of tho forces, Southern Division) made an excellent.sketch of. this homo, which still remains. ... ■ - 'In ISSI Captain Daniell and family removed t6 Bangitikei, and foul- years later Mrs. Daniell, one son, and Miss Juliette Danioll, made a visit to England, Miss Daniell subsequently, marrying Major H. 0. Doane. Captain Daniell and another son left in 1866 for a visit to England, but tho former died in New York, en route, .and was buried there. Mrs. Daniell died and was buried at Malta some years later. Mrs. Deane and her husband visited Wellington in 1881, when tho former looked in vain for the old landmarks she remembered so well. Her husband died many years ago. During the war Mrs. Deane was a kindly hostess, particularly to the New Zealand soldiers, in whom she toolc special interest. For the past ten years sho lived at Worplcsdon, with hor daughter, Miss Violet C. Doane. Their name is perpetuated in Wellington by Danicll street, Wellington South, and it is likely that Lawrence street, running off it, was named after Mrs. Danioll's family. The families were both distinguished ones, and served, the country well, both in. earlier clays'and during the Great War.

Captain and Mrs. Daniell desorve honourable mention and memory, as being among tho makers of Wellington at a, time full of darigor from hostile Natives, as well as suffering tho lonelitness inseparable from residence so far from England and friends'at the other end of the world.
