A CRUEL HAWKER

Hickl Barooky, a hawker, was driving his horse and van along the Bclraont road recently. A lady noticed that the horse appeared to be in pain, and she (stopped a passing motorist and asked whether he could do anything. He remonstrated with Barooky, and suggested that the horse be taken out of the cart. Upon Barooky refusing, the motorist said he would inform the police, and he did so. As a result Barooky was charged in the Magistrate's Court at Lower Ilutt yesterday", with having cruelly ill-treated the horse by working it while it was in an unfit state. Ho pleaded guilty. Giving evidence, the motorist said that the horse was in a lather of perspiration, and was suffering intensely. When he returned.with a.police constable the horse was lying down on the side of the road, groaning in agony. It seemed to be suffering from rheumatism.

Constable Dwyor gave corroborative evidence, ' and described (lie nature of the sores and other hurts, on the animal. Barooky had driven it from Hnywards that day.
