In tho House of Commons, in reply to a question, the Mines Secretary, Mr. E. Shinwcll, said that ho had consulted with tho Department of Scientific and Industrial.Research on the best way the Government could' assist tho development of low temperature carbonisation and other processes for tho scientific treatment oi' coal. Substantial progress had been made in tho last four years, and certain processes wero being operated on a commercial scala. Effective help : would be given by the Government, (1) in experiments for tho purpose of improving by refining tho value of tar oil, a by-product of low temperature carbonisation, and (2) by inducing s- wider use in the Government service of smokeless fuel.
He was considering what could be done to increase the use of pulverised fuel, especially for marine purposes. Important research bad l>oen carried out at the Fuel Besearch Station, and would 'continue.
