SHIPPING FREIGHTS.
The cheapness of the service rendered by shipping, is indicated in a' striking manner in the latest index of freights compiled by the Chamber of Shipping, «ays the Manchester "Guardian Commercial." The February index recorded an average of ' 17 per cent, below pre-war, ■whereas the latest Board of Trade index of wholesale prices showed an average level of 6.02 per cent, above pre-war. The only satisfaction that can be taken from the latest index is that freights maintain to a large extent the recovery, which set in during the second half of last year.'lt may be recalled that the index in May last year recorded a decline to only 17.11 per cent, of the 1920 base rate, whereas for February of this year it was 19.33 per eenfc. of that base rate.
