WHITE FANG SCORES

MAIN WAIRARAPA RACE

STANCHION BEHAVES WELL

White Fang scored his first success, this season -when he. narrowly beat Stanchion in the Easter Handicap, the principal race at the Waifarapa Racing Club's Autumn Meeting' yesterday. It was 'evident that lie rider, had received instructions to keep him up to his work all the way, for, although he was his customary last after inefield had gone a furlong, he was bustled along' leaving the straight and followed Dainty-Ways and Straightcourse into the back, and "thereafter, to the straight ".entrance, where The Swell, Count Palatine, and Stanchion was .the order of the others. White Fang had charge at the distance, and although Stanchion challenged strongly he held to his advantage to the post to win by a head. Count- Palatine was nearly two lengths away third, followed by Straightcourse, Dainty Ways, and The Swell. ,'■ t. All eyes were on Stanchion at the ■barrier but he behaved like a gentleman. It was somewhat fortunate for him, perhaps, fhat he drew the outside. S. Gerrand kept him well behind the others preliminary to the line-up, and then took him in when the rest "were squaring up. The release was not immediate, and Stanchion sidled to the outside rail, but he never switched, and faced the tape all the time. The start that followed was an excellent one; all lorses going off in a line. Stanchion was more than £50 better backed than Straightcourse, with a drop of nearly £100 more to AVhite Fang. Gerxand appeared to err on the favourite in ■letting him drift along the back, for he had him several lengths behind the field as they turned for home; and then found the leeway he had made just top much to recover. White Fang hung out badly in the'straight,-and; he had Stanchion out beyond the half-way line by the time .they reached the post. The others were grouped on- the rail. Count Palatine made a promising run on the turn, but in the run to the post he could not match the pair that beat him. Straightcourse and Dainty Ways were responsible for the pace, and the game'of cut-throat they played settled them before the end. The Swell was never properly into his stride, and his-rider; had a rough trip, on him. . -■ '■?-.■ ~.; ,
