CANADA CRITICAL

LAVISH EXPENDITURE

TO WELCOME NEW GOVERNOR

CIVIL SERVICE CUTS

Dnilcd Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received 2nd April, 1 p.m.) MONTREAL, Ist April. Lavish expenditure by the Government, in welcoming the now Governor-• General to-morrow, following a wholesale dismissal of Civil servants on the grounds of economy, are arousing criticism. There are two special trains to carry the Government Party from Ottawa to Halifax to meet Lord Bessborough, and ten special cars to carry the Governor's effects to Ottawa. The Government excursion to Halifax is declared unnecessary, as the welcome could be held in Ottawa. The Government's purchase for 15,000 dollars of the Chinese art collection Lord Willingdon left behind is also assailed. Dismissed Civil servants declare that-the State dinner to Lord Bessborough, to be attended only by the elect, is outrageous extravagance.
