DEPARTMENT'S RECOGNITION

Captain T. i. Hugo, iChief Inspector of JTLre Brigades, retired on. superannuation yesterday. He was met by the staff of the Department of Internal Affairs, with which he has beon connected for the last '33 years—being the first inspector of fire brigades in the Dominion—and reeatved a presentation. Mr. G. P. Newtan,' Under-Secre-tary of Internal Affairs, presided at a large gathering of the staff. I The Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. P. A. de la Perrelle) made the presentation. Mr. Perrell stated that he was very pleased to have had the opportunity of handing Captain Hugo a presentation made by the combined staffs of the Department. There was no doubt that Captain Hugo, before joining the Government service, proved himself to be a redoubtable fire fighter. He certainly had a very fine record, not only as an offiaor of the Department, but as a sailor and in fire fighting. Captain Hugo had had a great career. It was one; of tho Minister's pleasing duties to have been privileged to make the presentation to Captain Hugo. ' Keplying, Captain Hugo thanked the Minister and the officers of the Department for their very kind thought in making him a presentation on his retirement from thfli service. Many , reminiscences were.narrated by Captain Hugo of his early days both at sea and as a fire-fighter. He told of incidents connected with the bringing into operation of the Fi].-e Brigades Act, and spoke culogistieally of the helpfulness that had been extended to him by the executive offlceirs of the Department • of Internal Affairs, which, he said, seemed to him to coveir all avenues' of the State Service. Her regretted very much his retirement, and! said that,, although ah officer of the Department of. Internal Affairs had to work hard, he received reward fcr conscientious service.
