RACING AT DUNEDIN

SEVERAL GOOD FIELDS

CAN: NIGHTMARC'H WIN CUP?

The Dunedin Jockey Club's Cup Meeting opens at Wingatui to-morrow and concludes on Saturday, and the fields listed, with the exception of the Hurdles and Two-year-old Race, .ire strong in both number and class. There has not been much racing in the South recently, and it is possible that there will be some upsets on the form most recently shown, for other horses will have come on in the meantime. The fields and prospects are:— AUTUMN HURDLES HANDICAP, of 175 soys: one mllo and three-quarters. stlb stlb Amorist .... 11 S Hard Prince . 9.9 Antrim Boy .. 11 7 Callamart ... 9 7 Pangolin ■ ... 10 10 Usbrldge '...;, 0 0 In a poor field in he Autumn Hurdles Handicap, probably the most sought will be Pangolin and Callamart. Antrim Boy may not be so well supported as he otherwise might ■ have been on account of a heavy spill last week. Haul Prince, who usually races well on the course, will have a following on this account, but he will probably do bettor over the shorter distance' on Saturday. The handicap, appears to favour Callamart, and preference is given Callamart and Pangolin. TRIAL STAKES, of 150 soys; seven furlongs. st lb ''■■', st. lb. Bltractor ..8 4 Segravo 8 2 C 01..:, Crawford 8 4 Shatter 8 2 Appeal .... 8 2 Glass Jug ... 8 1 Bold . Brigand. 8 2 Positive ... 7 13 Consono .... 8 3 Miss Tembaron 7 13 Countermarch. 8 2 Musent Miss . 7.13 Ilkley ...... 8 2 Parysla .... 7 13 Owlsfllght ~. 82 Thornton ... 713 Pharaoh .....8-2 Lord Arsosy .7 9 There are several engaged in the Trial Stakes who have shown good form this season, and a close contest is -probable. Good support is likely for Bitractor, Appeal, Ilkley,' Owlsflight, Pharaoh,-. Segrave, Shatter, and Parysia, and among this lot alone it is difficult to discriminate. Two who may do as well as .any are Appeal and Segrave. PRESIDENT'S HANDICAP, of 200 soys; one mllo and a quarter. stlb stlb Dumblane ..9 6 Night Rose .. 7 13 Night Parade 9 0 Corn Queen .. 7 12 Night Effort .. 811 Solanura .... 7 9 Qulnopal ... 8 10 Good Gift ... 7 7 Ballance ... 8 4 Shipshape ... 1 7 Sailing Home 8 2 In the President's Handicap those who have best credentials at the distance are Dumblane, Night Parade,- Ballance, Sailing Home, and Shipshape, and the winner will probably come from among them. Night Parade, who has freshened up recently, will be one of the hardest to beat, and Jus main opponent may be Ballance, who accounted for ihe unreliable Dumblnnc in the Tapanui Cup last week. Good performances , should be registered by Night Parade and Ballance. PUBLICANS' HANDICAP, of 300 soys; six furlongs. v stlb stlb Meadow Lark 911 Bin Tin Tin .. •« 2 Silver Paper .. 9 8 Charmaine ..81 Compensation . 8 13 Money Mine '.. 7 12 Boyal Saxon .'8 10 , Master . ', Caterpillar ... 8, 0 < Anomaly >T I ,. Waving Corn . 8 6 Full Fling .. 7 0 -' A line through form shown j.n the South duringl the holidays and subsequently ' at Trentham suggests that ' Meadow Lark, the Compensation-Master Anomaly bracket, Royal Saxon', and the Caterpillar-Rin Tht Tin bracket should .perform creditably in the Publicans' Handicap. They may not have matters all their own way, however, for Silver Paper is gradually recovering all his former celerity, and he hasr advanced a lot in favour over the past few days. Perhaps "the best will be the Com-pensation-Master Anomaly „ bracket and Royal Saxon. , s DUNEDIN CUP HANDICAP. of'6sQ soys; one mllo and a half. stlb st lb Nlghtmarch ■ .. 9 13 Mount Boa ..7 5 Town Major .. ■ 8 5 Glenrowan ..73 Bed Sea 8 1 Admiral Drake 7 2 Black Duke ..8 1 Comprls .... 7 1 Pink Note .. 711 Shortly 7 0 Don Jose .... 7 8 Topere 7 0 Royal Saxon . 7 8 Rod Uaccr ..70 Some Toff .. 7 5 The Dunedin Cup Handicap piesents an extremely open aspect, and several hoi&es will be solidly supported. Nightmarch, in view of his continued excellent "galloping, will probably be one of the favourites, in spite of his recent failures, and he may well make amends here, for he is at home on the course, having, .among other successes, won the Cup two years ago. The race, too, is one in which topweiglits have often scored. With Gay Crest's jiot having made the trip, and First Sight's fatal accident this morning, the most doughty opponents remaining for Nightmarch read to be Red Sea, Black Duke, Don Jose, Admiral Drake, and Compris, and of these Don Jose may do best. Riccarton holds a strong hand, and its two best cards are Nightmarch and Don Jose. CHAMPAGNE STAKES, of 400 sots; six furlongs. •■• st lb st lb Fair Weather 9 1 Metal Bird .. 810 Last March . 8 18 'Hula Belie .. 8 ;7; Eclair 810 Ruling Light . 8 7 ' The field for the Champagne Slakes is a disappointing one, being practically confined to the province's own youngsters. Three who will carry the bulk of the support are Fair Weather, Last March, and Hula Belle (who won at Tapanui in poor class last week). It i 8 likely that a short-priced favourite will be made of FanWeather. STEWARDS' HANDICAP, of 200 soys; one mile. ' ' stlb stlb First Bald .. 812 Stralghtcourse 8 1 Pride 8 11 Solmar ... .8. 0, Camisader .. 8. 9 High Gear .. 8 0 Wingatui ...'i 8 6 Miss Mercta .. 713 Al Jolson .i. 8.5 Speed Light .. 7 13 Assemble «... S 4 JocK o' Barneses .... 8 1 Hazeldean 713 Salient ;.:.... 8 1 •.,-... ..-..■■■■■ Another problem is presented by the acceptance for the Stewards' Handicap, and attention is better confined to horses who have raced recently than to such fair per-' formers as Pride and^ Wingatui, who have not been seen in,action for sonic months. First Raid ran well at Trentham, and is not out of the contest with 8.12, but Camisader, Al Jolsbn,; Straightcourse, and Solmar may do better at the terms. Camisader appeared to be coming back to form, at the Southland Meeting, and he reads as attractively as any, with his main opposition possibly being provided.by, the* pro-, moted hackß, Al Jolson and Straightcourse. Preference is for Camisader and Ai Jolson. BEBWICK HANDICAP*Iot 150 soys; seven ''..':.'■' ': furlonji . ■: ' . stlb ' '.'. Frahcolin, a useful two-year-old a couple of Beasons ago, is apparently back in form/ for she won under a good weight at Tapanui last week, and she will probably be one of the favourites. Some1 Acre' and. Steeton will offer her stout opposition, however, and there are other possibilities in Cough, Totolomai, and Meitui, while Pharaoh will also enter the reckoning if reserved for this race. Two who Bhould perform creditably are Franeolin and Some Acre.
