HUTT VALLEY SOCIETY

Members of the Hutt Valley Caledonian Society and their friends met at the Oddfellows' Hall and celebrated the evening in true Caledonian spirit. The chief, Mr. W. Marshall, opened proceedings with a few remarks on the wonderful genius of Burns, after which, led by the Drum Major, the "Haggis" was played in. The chief then gave the "Address to the Haggis," and congratulated Mrs. Baker on the "honest sonsy face" of the dish. The programme of musical and other items was ' greatly enjoyed. Mr. Goldie, Mr; Millward. and Miss Lumsden brought back memories of "Caledonian stern and wild" by their excellent rendering of Scottish songs. Miss Marshall gave two exceptionally graceful dancing items. Besponding to the toast of "The House of1 Representatives," Mr. W. Nash, M.P., delighted his audience by the pithiness of his remarks, and surprised them by his knowledge of the life and work of Eobert Burns. Mr. D. M'Leod then gave the toast of "Kindred Societies and Visitors." Mr. Kerr, a visitor from Scotland, gave a beautiful rendering of "The Daisy" and Mr. Bowden expressed his appreciation of the manner in which the memory of the bard was sustained. Drum-Major. Boy pictured the various sides in the life and character of "Bobbie Burns." His quotations were ably rendered. He finished with a summary of that great masterpiece, I "The Cotter's Saturday Night."
