WHY SHOULD THEY PAY?
(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") CHRISTCHURCH, 24th January. "I do not know why the B class broadcasting stations should have _ to pay copyright fees for broadcasting musical works," said Mr. A. R. Harris, general manager of tho Radio Broadcasting Company, commenting on the closing down of B class stations owing to copyright difficulties. "The Australasian Performing Eights Association claims to control 98 per cent, of the world's copyright insofar as Australia and Now Zealand are concerned, and in return for the privilege of broadcasting its catalogue the Broadcasting Company pays to the association 6 per cent, of _ its gross revemio from receiving licences, 5,' ho continued. "If the service broadcast by the B class stations increases the ninnber of listeners, then the Broadcasting' Company automatically pays the Pcforming Rights Association a percentage of the licence fees received from these listeners. .' "The payment to the Performing Rights Association is made on the gross receipts from receiving licences, regardless of the fact that the broadcast service includes sporting broadcasts, lectures, news and market reports, and entertainment' on • which copyright is. not concerned and which is the sole and only interest of a great many listeners."
