PETONE AND INSTITUTE

Petoue made quite a good start in their match against Institute on No. 1 wicket at the Basin Reserve. Petone batted nearly all day to make 282 runs. X Roberts made 149 in excellent style. He batted for a greater part of the alternoon, defying the Institute bowling in his almost chanceless display, and monopolising the scoring. No other batsman was outstanding. Foley was the most successful bowler for Institute, taking five wickets for 83 runs. The pitch did not suit Henderson, and it was late in the afternoon before he took his first wicket. Institute's heldmg was patchy, many runs being saved by smart ground work by some members of the team, while others dropped catches. Hamilton and Roberts were Petone s opening pair. Hamilton kept his'end up well for a time, but at 20 he gave a catch to Bilby off Foley. Smallwood made only 5 before he was caught by Henderson off one of Bilby's deliveries. Simmonds brightened "matters up' considerably, scoring freely for a time off Foley. Roberts meanwhile was taking toll of the bowling, making his runs with a pretty variety ot strokes. Hope failed to make many runs, so it was left to M. Nicholls to partner Roberts towards his century, which he gained with a stroke for 2. Roberts s performance was greeted with hearty applause. Aitken was now at the crease, j tossing down tricky slows, and it was to a'straiglit one that Nicholls was given out lbw. Scott, the incomer, made a most uncertain start, being several times almost out, but once he got his eye m he showed a sturdy defence. .Roberts, who cave only one chance when past his century, was given out ftw to Foley when only one short of his 150. Spence immediately took toll of Foley. Batting at the northern end of the ground, .he sent the first ball over the palings for six, he was dropped off the second, which realised two, and the third went for six. He was finally caught, however, after_ a brief and merry life for his 26. Senior commenced brightly, but did not last long. H. E. Nicholls, who went in second last wicket down, was still in when stumps were drawn for the day, Ritchie being dismissed for 2. As it was about 6.20 p.m. when Petone's innings closed, Institute did not go to the crease. Details:— PJETONJE. First Innings.
