PRODUCE & MARKET REPORTS FROM DAY TO DAY

DAIRY POSITION

NEED FOR CONFIDENCE

EFFECT OF QUICK SALES

(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") INVEKCARGILL, This Day. A preliminary conference was held in hivei'cargill on Saturday between producers and local representatives of the dairy produce exporting houses'to discuss ways and means of combining to restore confidence on the London market towards New Zealand dairy produce, in the hope that prices for the Dominion's output o£ butter and cheese might approach nearer to the parity o£ produce from other countries. The proceedings were held in commit- " tee, but according to a. statement issued subsequently the meeting was agreed that it was not in the best interests of the Kew Zealand producers for the butter and cheese to be marketed under the present system, whereby it was placed on the market for immediate sale on arrival at London, the position being aggravated by tlje action of quick quitters who endeavoured to sell while the produce was still on the water, so as to avoid possible falls in tne market. It was contended that this hurried system of selling reacted adversely against the price ruling for the Dominion article, and -\vas largely responsible for the unsatisfactory position iv which the producers now found themselves. The representatives of the mar- • keting houses took up the attitude.that without instructions from their principals they could do nothing, and the meeting decided that the Dairy Producers' League, •which had convened the meeting, should prepare a questionnaire for submission, by the-agents to their principals, and on the .replies being received a further meeting, probably in "a fortnight, would he called.
