WAR VETERANS' HIGHWAY
Visitors to the Third Olympic Winter Games, to be held at Lake Placid, NonYork, in 1932, will witness one of .the most remarkable engineering undertakings in the Adirondack*, the 2,000,000----dollar Whiteface Mountain highway, rising to an altitude of 5000 ft. Eight miles long, the highway will reach from Wilmington to within 300 ft of the top of the famous mountain which makes the eastern skyline of this community. It will commemorate the services and sacrifices of the veterans of the World War and upon^completion will be known as the New York State World War Veterans' Memorial Highway. The view from the top of the mountain is unsurpassed in the United , States. A perpetual light will be placed ' on the summit and will burn in memory of tho dead. This light, which will also »servo as an. aviation beacon, will be visiblo as far north as Montreal.
The Commission in charge of . the building of the road h,as made plans for a rest room, on the summit, ao that people can stay overnight oa the mountain in order to view the sunrise. An elevator is to be installed in the mountain to permit easy access from the top of the road to the extreme peak.
