UNSEASONABLE WEATHER

■ The- present spell of cold, stormy, uni generally unseasonable weather is primarily duo to a depression which passed over New Zealand yesterday and which was intensified considerably as it reached the eastern side; Since last night rather severe southerly weather lias swept the country. Yesterday scattered rain only was reported,, chiefly from the West Coast of the southern part of the South Island, the weather otherwise being dull to fair. But a southerly change set in over the South Island later in the day and extended during tho night to the rest of the Dominion. With- it came rain in nearly, all districts, and some heavy falls, hail in the South Island, and snow on tho mountains. Tho worst weather was experienced on the East Coast of j the South Island. Auckland had fair to cloudy weather yesterday, with a westerly breeze, but sonio. showers fell in the evening. It was a dull day in Wellington, with a I strong north-west wind which made things unpleasant. A little before midnight a change to southerly weather set in and rain fell to the extent of 114 points. A warm morning in Christchurch was followed about midday by a big drop in temperatures. Since 7 p.m. a strong southerly wind has been blowing, and heavy rain squalls had accounted for 77 points lip to 9 a.m. today. Cold, unsettled, and showery weather prevailed in Dunedin yesterday, and heavy rain fell last night. The forecast issued at noon to-day is n little, more encouraging. Strong southerly winds, which in places will reach gale force, are expected to decrease in strength gradually. The weather, although still changeable and showery in most districts, should improve, but- temperatures will bo cold.
