"IN THE MEANTIME"
QUALIFYING PHRASE
REPLY TO MR. ATMORE
(By Telegraph.—Trpss Association.) NAPIER, This Day. - A long statement regarding the Hon. H. Atmore's criticism of the remarks made by the chairman of the Hawkes Bay Education Board, Mr. Gr. A. Maddison, has been made by the latter gentleman, who says his words at the meeting were, "Advice received from the Government amounted to repudiation in the meantime, or until after 31st March next, of any further ■ payments on subsidised school works • already authorised, some of which were already completed or in progress." The Minister, he says, appears to have overlooked the significance of the. qualification "in the'meantime." "Tho Minister," says Mr. Maddison, "takes definite exception to the use of the word 'repudiation,' and I am quite prepared to substitute the word 'sus.pension,' as I have no desire to cause any disruption of the friendly co-opera-tion which has existed between us at all times."
