SANDERS CUP TRIAL

BETTY'S THIRD WIN

A DECISIVE -VICTORY

The Betty .made amends for her disappointing display in : the third Sanders Cup trial by winning the fourth race, sailed :bn the harbour last evening, in a decisive manner. This time she carried a leading jib, and it made a marked improvement in her performance. All six boats carried three men each. ' The Idono had the best of tho start as they set off in the light northerly breeze on the lead from Jcrningham, to the Shelly Bay buoy. A spinnaker was set for a while on the Clyde, an experiment which was also "tried by the Wellesley 11. Both spinnakers skied in the freshening breeze, and the Clyde's was taken in, while tho Wellesley, which was. well to windward of .the other boats, squared away a little on resuming her course, and continued under the extra sail. The Idono had a.-fair lead as they approached the. mark, and the. .Wellesley was also' handy. The Idono was first round with the others at the following intervals: Wellesley. losec; Kia Ora, 4Ssec; Betty, 50see; Miss Josephine, 54sec; Clyde, 56sec. With the exception 'of the Kia Ora, which kept iu'close to the eastern shore, all the boats stood out on a long board towards Kaiwarra. Johnson had the Betty sailiug free, and she gradually gained on the Idouo, the pair drawing away from the other three. ' With less than half the journey to the mark boat at Ngahauranga covered, the Betty had the measure of the Idono, with the Miss Josephine, which was sailing the same course, some distance in the rear. The Clyde and the Wellesley were engaged in a duel further in towards the wharves, and their chances appeared hopeless, but they both received a. good, lift up while the Betty and the Idono ran into a comparatively calm patch,. and they drew nearer and nearer to the leaders. Still the Betty made good progress, and she was first round the launch' lmin 28sec ahead of the Idono. The Clyde weathered the Wellesley just on the mark, and they squared away for the run lmin 58sec and 2miu lsec respectively behind the Betty. The Miss Josephine was 4min 4sec, and the Kia ora.4min 35sec.after the leader. The Betty lost ground at the start through her spinnaker not being out smartly, but once it was set she retained the lead, and finished lmin lOsec ahead of the Wellesley, which came down strongly with a good breeze. The Clyde finished lmin 31sec after the Betty, and the Idono lmin 33seo. The times of the other two were not taken. The selector (Mr. W. Duncan) was not able to make a definite statement as_ to whether there would be any more trials now that the Betty has won three of the four races. He will probably watch the performances of the boats in the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club's race to-mor-row af ternooD'. " '
