DEFICIT IN PROSPECT

UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF

(Received 4th December, 2 p.m.) "WASHINGTON, 3rd December. President Hoover opposed the con* tinuance of the reduced income taxes, in recommending to Congress to-day a Budget for 3,932,842,000 dollars, for the nest fiscal year. He reiterated hia prediction that there- would be a deficit of 180,000,000 dollars this year, afi warned Congress that appropriations^ looking beyond action in the next six months to alleviate unemployment and' drought would result in another deficit in 1932. He supplemented his request for 150,000,000 dollars as an unemployment emergency appropriation, for construction work, with a proposal that 132,000,000 dollars be spent on public buildings. Before the close of the next fiscal year the United States will spend 690,000,000 dollars on national defence* if Congress approves ,the Estimates^ This is nearly thirty-four millions ifess than the current year, t>ut it is contemn plated that the use of unexpected balances would- almost offset the decrease. Fifteen million dollars is required for the liquor anti-smuggling activities of the Coastguard.
