A BIG COAL MINE MERGER.

A merger of all collieries in Lancashire and Cheshire was recently decided upon In Manchester by owners representing the whole of the vast coalfields in the two counties. The scheme will involve £20,----000,000 of capital, amalgamate about 140 collieries,- and affect 86,500 workers. It applies to both sides of the industryworking and distribution—and in effect represents one. of the greatest attempts at rationalisation yet made in this dountry. Between 15,000,000 and 20,000,000 tons of coal are produced each year by the Lancashire and Cheshire coalfields.
