THE MALOLO

MEDICAL INSPECTION

DENIAL OF COMPLAINT

The statement made at Auckland hy an officer of the American tourist ship Malolo that there was undue delay on the part of the port health officer at Wellington in connection with the medical inspection'of the passengers and crew, is strongly denied by the Health Department. ■ Every effort, it is said, was made to inspect the ship as quickly as possible. The ship did not arrive at 2.45 p.m., as stated, but at 3.35 p.m. In order to facilitate the inspection, the port health officer was accompanied by a second medical officer. ' One doctor inspected the crew, and the other the passengers, with the result that their work was finished within half an hour. In spite of the fact' that an officer stated in Auckland that the health of the passengers was "assured from the start of the voyage," the discovery was made sof eases of a certain disease, ana the .-persons affected were not allowed to land.- The captain of the steamer was informed that after the inspection at ■Wellington,- a further inspection at Auckland would be, unnecessary.
