CRICKET
TOWN V. COUNTRY
TALENT FOR ENGLISH TOUR
Interest in this season's cricket in New Zealand is being stirred by the fact that players are endeavouring to qualify for places in, the team to visit England next year. Excellent talent is offering in Wellington, and its country districts, and some of it will be give a. serious try-out on Friday and Saturday in-the annual Town v. Country match at the Basin Eeserve. Occasion will also be taken to use the larger wickets for the first time in New Zealand. A strong country team has been selected, and it will bo led by T. C. Lowry, who, it seems, is certain to captain the New Zealand team on its big tour next year. Several colts are being given a chance to gain further experience as Town representatives, while' others include C. S. Dempster and E. D. Blundell, both of whom are regarded as certainties for the Now Zealand team, and J. Newman, another strong candidate. Some of Wellington's best and most reliable representatives, however, have' been passed over for this match iv order to make room for the colts, notable omissions including those of. James, M'Leod, and M'Girr, as well as Hollings (who is unable at present to take part in much crickot). The-Town team is quite a good one for the particular match, in which there should be- a good measure of meritorious performance and bright cricket.' Play is to commence.each day at 11 a.m., and stumps will be drawn at 6 p.m. The intervals will be: Luncheon, 1, p.m. to 1.45 p.m., tea 3.45 p.m. to 4 p.m. The following are the teams:—Country: Lowry (Rangitikei) captain, Stephenson (Hawkes Bay), Cameron (Rangitikei), Naismith (Taranaki), Reaney (Hawkes Bay), Gallichan (Manawatu), Burke (Rangitikei), Pacey (Manawatu), Massey (Wairarapa), Norris (Manawatu), and A. Newman (Nelson), with O'Brien (Hawkes Bay) and Hoar (Wairarapa) as emergencies. Town: C. S. Dempster (Institute) captain, Hepburn (Kilbirnie), Airey (Wellington), Hamilton (Petone), Lamason (Old Boys), Crook (Kilbirnie), Standidge (Midland). Timlill (Midland), Warnes (Hutt). Blundell (Wellington), and Newman (Midland). The umpires will be Messrs. C. G. Wilson and J. Hutehings.
