NEGLECTED CHANCE
YOUTH SENT TO BORSTAL
Granted probation in June last Lewis Edward Williams, aged 21, neglected to take advantage of the opportunity offered him, and his recent behaviour has again resulted in his appearance in the Magistrate's. Court. Before Mr. E. Page, S.M., to-day he pleaded guilty to two charges of theft of money totalling £6 13s lid, from John Craig Wright. "This youth seems lately to have let himself go altogether," said DetectiveSergeant Holmes. In June last the accused was before the Court for attempted false pretences, and he was granted probation. Since then he seemed to have formed the habit of renting cars from Rental Cars, Ltd., and in this way had incurred a considerable debt which his father had to meet. When returning ono of • the cars to the garage one day the accused saw the office open with no one in it, and he went in and took 13s lid from the till. ' He took advantage of a similar opportunity on a subsequent day, this time taking £6 from the till. The accused was in permanent employment, earning £4 10s a week. He had a good home and there could be no excuse for his conduct. It seemed to be one of those cases where it was necessary to place the accused under some restraint. "I think he must have one of those dishonest streaks," said the Probation Officer (Mr. T. P. Mills). The accused's conduct outside this dishonesty was good. Mr. Mills thought it was a case for the Borstal, as Williams had been a failure under probation. The Magistrate sentenced Williams to two years' Borstal detention. "He has had his chance." Mr. Page said.
