MISS RANSOM CLOSES DAY

. Trenthain-traincd horses made . amerids for their consistent failure at the meeting by supplying the two dividends in-the concluding event, the Empire Handicap. Four of them were engaged, and the two to succeed- were Miss Ransom and Arikinui. Miss Ransom showed exceptional brilliance, for when asked to go out and challenge Arikinui at the distaoce, she .simply flew in response to her rider's urge and quickly put the issue out of doubt. Previously this season she had coi/ne to the end of her resource at the close of seven furlongs, but she had a store to draw on yesterday., Arikinui, Limited, and Rroad Acre Vere the smartest out, but wl>cn the field had settled down Limited was piloting Arikinui, Miss Ransom, Tenac<re, Malayan, Broad Acre, and Playground. Miss Ransom was given a steadier ac/ross the top, but was up behind Limited and Arikinui again as they swung into the.straight, and

when Arikinui settled Limited she in turn took him on and beat him home by a length. Bonogue was finishing strongly a neck further away, and Playground was a good fourth. Next to complete were Limited, Te Awha, and Broad Acre. Arikinui was a very warm order, with Playground, Maui, Malayan, Broad A.ere, Miss Ransom, and Tenacre all at even call. Avikinui hopped out smartly from No. 1, but lie had had, just about enough at the end. Playground was handy throughout without ever being a menace to the leaders. Maui did ript show up, but Malayan drifted back after beginning well. Broad Acre is consistent but not brilliant. Tenacre was again hurdled off, but did not lose much at the start. However, he did not come on from the top of the straight. Bonogno had to make up a lot of leeway, and the way he finished pointed to his being the unlucky runner. Denier again refused to go into line and took no part in the race."
