The Mkau Hack Handicap gave race--1 goers the exhilaration of another "blanket" finish, the three place-fillers passing the post almost in line, and the judge's verdict going for Arisus,' Leisure, and ; Rothen, with only half-heads between them. . Arisus led the whole way, closely at- , tended by' Leisure, Orapai, and Kothen. : Arisus carried Leisure, and Rothen ofi at the straight entrance, and the three came ; down the.stretch locked together wide out. r Fora moment it appeared that Orapai, who had slipped through along the rail, . would win, easily, but he was unable to reap any benefit from the decided advantage he had obtained, arid he was a poor fourth- at the end.. \ Had Kothen had a smooth run he would probably have been 1 the winner, for his rider was considerably '< hampered by the other pair bearing out on him.?: Tentcall was \vell back fifth, and ■ Projection, Courtlike,. and Callapat were 1 next. • ■ ;, , ' Callapat was...a very warm favourite, and there were big drops to Arisus and Leisure. Callapat was not sighted in the early part, and he was nearer at the end than at any other stage. Courtlike showed up at the top of the straight with a brief run, and should improve. Projection did not come on the scene till late, and Some Acre also made a belated appearance after an indifferent beginning. Patearoa and ! Pass On were prominent for a short space early, butwere then lost.
