PARK ROAD RAMP

NECESSARY SOME DAY

PETONE OPINIONS

The P.etpne Borough Council, at its ■ meeting a fortnight ago, agreed with the Minister of Railways that the expense of erecting a ramp at tli& Park road railway crossing would not be warranted, and that the late Sir- Joseph Ward had misunderstood the position when he promised that- the Government would contribute two-thirds of the cost of the ramp. A different opinion was expressed by the council last, night, and it was, decided to inform the. Minister that the council thought that'the' promise made by Sir Joseph Ward should bo given effect to when the increase in traffic warranted it. ' . . The Mayor (Mr. D. M'Kcnzie) said that the line across Park road was in what would be the centre of a very busy industrial area. It had been suggested that Sir Joseph' Ward did. not understand the position when ho promised,, two-thirds of the cost, but in his opinion Sir Joseph Understood it quite well, for he could see the future of that area. With tho opening of the Wainui tunnel traffic" would become very congested. ;' . ' , Councillor J. W. Longman said it seemed foolish to ask for a ramp over a siding and absurd to suggest that Sir Joseph Ward had not understood the position wheu he made his promise. Councillor V. E. Jaeobson said that that was not the point.. It was an ob-, ligation upon the Railway Department to maintain safety at all' level crossings iii .the country. .' - Councillor :'H. A. Ryder,'thought'that with- tho opening of the' Wainui "tunnel and-a possible road to the Wairarapa through it .Park road would bo greatly used, .', :..'. ''Councillor' Longman:"'I'A railway lino and a siding arc two different things." Councillor Ryder: "Tliis is not a siding.ss . \
