CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP OF NEW ZEALAND

At last -Tuesday's committee meeting of the Wellington Chess Club it was decided to nominate Messrs. W. E. Mason and A. W. Gyles as competitors for the chess championship of New Zealand—the tourney to decide which title is to open at Rotorua on Boxing Day. It is hoped that Mr. W. E. Mason, who has • been champion of New Zealand six times, will be able to spare. the necessary time. Mr. Gyles has been runner-up no less than eight times, and. his many friends .would naturally like to see him "go one better" on this occasion. Mr. Ernest E. Hicks has been chosen to represent the Ngaio Chess Club, and the Working Men's Club has once more nominated Messrs. K. Beyer, F. K. Kelling. and W. J. Fairburn, though, it is not yet known whether all.three will be able to take part in the Rotorua Congress. ■
