MATCHES BY TELEGRAPH
A committee,meeting was held by.the Wellington' Chess .Club on Tuesday evening, when a letter was read from tha Post and Telegraph. Department, notifying that, in future it proposed to levy,.a charge of one penhy per mile for theuiSe of the Department's, wires for telegraphic matches. As it has been a hard, struggla to pay the hitherto. existing charges-r-for the i-easonableness of. which the. chessplayers- of New Zealand have in a largis measure to thank the sympathetic interest of the late Sir Joseph .Ward —the various speakers were very dubious, about tha clubs' ' being able to afford these matches annually in future. 'They may, perhaps, v be held every two years, or—as lias been unofficially suggested in Auckland, and also in Dunedin —they may have to be .abandoned indefinitely. The new burden would press more heavily on the Auckland and Otago Chess Clubs, as they are not centrally situated. The matter" is to be further considered when the views of the other New Zealand clubs are available. It may be added, that a wireless match between the Otago Chess Club and the.Millions Club in Sydney has been av> ranged.
