EVANS BAY RACE

MARANGI'S GOOD WIN

The first keel yachts' race on the Evans! Bay Yacht and Motor Boat Club's programme w-as sailed off on Saturday afternoon in -'a strong northerly wind, and xesuited in a close win for Marangi after an exciting finish with Wairero 11. . The Mark Foy starting system was used for the first time, aud-the course was from tl.ve, -clubhouse to Coroniandel, thence to "Somes Island.- and home. All the. boats were reefed down for the long beat after the ..start, , Marangi performed very well, and on the run home, at the head o£ Evans Bay, had passed the other boats. The limit boat, Rawene, which was'under storm trysail only, was at this stage some distance behind Marangi, and was being steadily overhauled by Wairere **• other starters were well in the rear. Off Shelly Bay, Marangi's spinnaker suddenly skied, sending one of her crew overboard. She was brought up into the wind smartly, and the spinnaker was in and the man picked' ilp in a very few.minutes. This delay had brought. Wairere IT. alongside, and the. issue was in doubt for the rest of the race. At the Patent Slip Marangi again set her spinnaker, and drew ahead to win by 15seo. The third' Sanders Cup trial, which was to have been-held on Saturday.afternoon, was postponed until this evening, on account of the heavy northerly weather. MOTOR BOAT CLUB OPENING. The Port Nicholson Motor Boat .Club held ita opening picnic yesterday. A very strong northerly was blowing, so ladies and children went to Lowry Bay by bus, and members made the trip in launches. After lunch numerous races and- novelty events were held, and were very keenly contested. A very enjoyable day was concluded by Mr. W. Cable (president), -when he officially opened the season' and presented the prizes. The hundred-odd members and friends had a very successful outing, and returned to Wellington about 7 o'clock.
