POOR BATTING.

On- a good wicket, Kilbirnie, who won the toss and batted- first, gave a mediocre display against Midland at the Kilbirnie Reserve, and when the last wicket fell, after close on three hours' batting, the total was only 174. Christopherson and Bilby opened to the bowling of Newman and Baker, and had put on 62 when Christopherson went lbw. Bilby followed without any increase in the score. Hayman and Kershaw batted cautiously for a time, but the bowling seemed to have them thinking. When he was 11 Hayman appeared to snick a ball from Baker, but an appeal led to his being given out lbw. Some of the Midland players considered that Hayman was the victim of an incorrect decision, but the umpire held to it. and Hayman had to go. Ward followed, but Kershaw, after a careful knock, was caught, and four wickets were down for only 91. Crook opened with a boundary, but a foolish call resulted in his then being run out and the position looked black for. the home side. The batting for the • rest of- the innings was slow- and .patchy.
