STAFF'S KEEN INTEREST
WELFARE OF RAILWAYS
A keenly interested member of Professor Murphy's audience at his lecture to raihvaymen on Wednesday evening was the Minister in Charge of the Department, the Hon. W. A. Veitch. Asked this morning how he was impressed by the lecture, the Minister remarked on the significance of the large attendance of members of the service who were present. "Although I do not agree with everything that Professor Murphy said," Mr. Veitch observed, "I consider his lecture was a most valuable and useful one, and that his opinions were appreciated by everyone present. But to my mind the most valuable feature of the lecture was the fact that the hall was filled to the door with rank-and-file railway men, whose presence proved quite clear y that the railway staff are keenly interested in the economics of railway administration, and are willing and anxious to appty to their everyday work such measures as will improve the conditions of the service. ' This mental attitude of the railways staff will ultimately prove the most helpful of all influences to bring about what will assuredly increase the usefulness of the service and restore it to a sounder financial position." ■ ' •
