THE KELBURN VIADUCT
The first girder of the central arch of the new viaduct has been lowered into position, and will be "poured" within the next few days. This middle portion of the bridge will eventually consist of four of these girders, which are some 80 feet in length. As each one has to be separately built before lowering into a mould into which the concrete is poured, the work is necessarily long, tmt once in their appointed positions the filling in with concrete is not a lengthy process. It seems doubtful, at the present rate of progress, that the viaduct can be completed before the New Year, but as there is now nothing to stay construction it is hoped that work will advance rapidly. The old viaduct is still in commission, carrying one-way traffic, from Karori to Kelbura only. With the prospect of another two or three months' service, the authorities may. deem it necessary to close the bridge, as it appears to rattle in every joint when heavy vehicles cross, and continual use is not improving its strength.
